Accessibility

Find the barriers that turn customers away

Millions of people use the web with a screen reader, a keyboard or larger text. When a site doesn't work for them they leave, and they rarely say why. Most barriers come from the same short list, and most are quick to fix once you know where they are.

  • Every page, on a computer and a phone: each page we read is tested against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA with two engines, axe-core and IBM Equal Access.
  • Key pages walked: we use them with the keyboard, zoom in, narrow them to a phone's width, widen the text spacing, and check anything that moves can be paused.
  • Fixes, not noise: an issue repeated across your template is grouped into one fix rather than listed hundreds of times, with plain-language steps beside it.

  • Image buttons, image-map areas and embedded objects with no text alternative
  • Server-side image maps
  • Suggested descriptions for images that are missing one

Color and contrast

  • Text too faint against its background, including text over photos and gradients
  • Placeholder text too faint to read

  • Links that stand out by color alone

Page structure

  • Pages with no main heading, empty headings, or heading levels that skip
  • Bold or large text used as a heading but not marked as one
  • Lists built from plain text, and broken list markup
  • Data tables with missing, empty or mismatched headers, or fake captions
  • Header, main content and footer regions marked so a screen reader can jump between them, with none duplicated and no content left outside
  • Letters spaced apart so a screen reader reads them one at a time
  • Embedded frames with no title, or the same title twice

Titles and language

  • Missing page titles, and one title copied across many pages
  • Pages with a missing or invalid language, or set to a different language from their text
  • Passages in another language marked with an invalid language code

Keyboard and focus

  • A keyboard walk of your key pages, checking for traps you can't tab out of
  • Focus you can see on every link, button and field
  • Focus hidden behind a sticky header or cookie banner
  • A working "skip to content" link
  • Focus order that jumps around the page, and pop-up menus that open away from their button
  • Scrolling areas, frames and custom controls a keyboard can't reach
  • Controls that only respond to a mouse
  • Hidden content that still takes keyboard focus
  • Controls nested inside other controls
  • Duplicate keyboard shortcuts

Buttons, links and controls

  • Buttons and links with no readable name, or that only say "click here" or "read more"
  • Buttons whose spoken name doesn't match the words on screen
  • Icon-font buttons a screen reader reads as a random word
  • Menus and accordions that don't say whether they are open or closed
  • Dialogs, tabs, tooltips, progress bars, sliders and menu items with no name
  • ARIA roles and attributes that are invalid, misspelled, deprecated or in the wrong place
  • Duplicate IDs that break labels and ARIA references

Forms and sign-in

  • Form fields without labels, with more than one label, or labelled only by placeholder or hover text
  • Checkboxes and radio buttons not grouped with their question
  • Name, email, phone and address fields that should fill in automatically
  • Password fields that block pasting

Zoom, layout and touch

  • Pages that block pinch-zoom or limit how far text can be enlarged
  • Text that can't grow when zoomed, and content cut off at 200% zoom
  • Pages that scroll sideways at phone width
  • Text that gets cut off or overlaps when spacing is widened, and spacing locked in place
  • Pages locked to portrait or landscape
  • Tap targets too small or too close together, on a computer and on a phone
  • Content that appears on hover and vanishes before you can read it
  • Drag-only controls with no other way to use them

Motion and timing

  • Carousels, videos and animations that move with no way to pause them
  • Blinking and scrolling marquee text
  • Pages that refresh or redirect themselves on a timer

Consistency across pages

  • Menus that change order from page to page
  • Help and contact links that move between pages

PDFs

  • PDFs that are untagged, so a screen reader can't follow them
  • Scanned PDFs with no real text
  • PDFs with no title or language

Statement and widgets

  • Your accessibility statement: whether you have one and what it claims
  • Accessibility overlay widgets, and what they claim

What your report gives you

Mapped to WCAG

Every finding names the success criterion it fails, and the report lists all Level A and AA criteria. One switch shows the same results against WCAG 2.1 AA.

Fix once, fixes everywhere

A logo link with no name on every page is one change to your header, so the report shows it as one fix with every page it reaches.

Progress you can show

Each audit is dated and kept in your dashboard. On a Monitor plan the site is re-audited every month, so you can see what was fixed and what is new.
